Can You Apply For Medicare Before Age 65?

In general, the eligibility age for Medicare is 65. However, there are certain circumstances under which you may be eligible for Medicare before turning 65. Here are a few scenarios where you might be able to apply for Medicare early:

  1. Disability: If you have been receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits for 24 months, or if you have been diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), you may be eligible for Medicare regardless of your age.
  2. End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD): If you have ESRD, commonly known as kidney failure, and require dialysis or a kidney transplant, you may qualify for Medicare, regardless of your age.
  3. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS): If you have been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, you are automatically eligible for Medicare, regardless of your age. There is no waiting period.

It’s important to note that the specific eligibility requirements and rules for early Medicare enrollment can vary, so it’s best to contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) or visit their website at www.medicare.gov to get accurate and up-to-date information about your situation. They can provide guidance on eligibility and help you understand the steps to take for enrollment.
