Protection for your Bicycle and your Investment

By March 28, 2012June 8th, 2020Insurance

A cheap and healthy option for many commuters is a bicycle, and there are good spin offs for the environment too. This ‘win-win’ combination is a contributing factor in the rising numbers of bicycles on our roads. You need to protect your bicycle as you would any other asset, so you need to take it into account when you are getting California home insurance quotes.

However, theft prevention is much better than having to go through losing our bike and dealing with an insurance claim, so make sure you do everything you can to deter thieves. Always lock your bike when you leave it in a public place, and make sure you use a good quality lock. Also, lock it correctly – the wheels and frame should be chained to a pole or bike rack. You can register your bike with the local police and the National Bike Registry – recovery of stolen bicycles can be more successful if there is a record of your bike and its serial number with the authorities.

You also need to make sure that it is properly insured. It might be covered by your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, but the deductible could be expensive. You might want to consider a floater instead, so ask about the premiums for that when you are getting California home insurance quotes. A floater could be particularly good if you have an expensive, customized bike, as it may offer higher coverage, no deductibles and repair costs if the bike is damaged.
